Anyway, if you are a PhD student or a researcher you need to download and study other people's scientific works. For most journals (the most important ones) your institution should have already a subscription.

However you'll probably have already experienced that sometimes, you need a paper you cannot download through your institution, pretty annoying eh?

So... how can you solve this problem?

Where can you download research papers for free?

Where to find free scientific journal articles?

How to get that f*ck*ng full-text pdf?

Are there alternatives to sci-hub?

Yes, just read below!

By the way, is sci-hub down? NO, once again, just read below!

I will list you several options to address this problem. At least one of them will be suitable for you. I'm 99.9999% sure! ;)

1) Ask to the librarian of your university. He/She knows for sure whom ask the paper you are looking for.

2) Look for the draft version of the published paper.
A good starting point is the Cornell University Library http://arxiv.org/ where many researchers put their papers before they are accepted on some journal.
Very often the authors update the file on arxiv.org even after the acceptance.

3) Search NOT on google.com but on https://scholar.google.com instead.
Insert the reference of your paper (Author(s), journal, volume, page), perform the search and when you find it, click "show all versions".
In this way you can check if the pdf of the paper you are intersted in is available somewhere over the web.

4) Check if your Journal is listed here http://highwire.stanford.edu/lists/freeart.dtl

5) Ask the authors and/or visit their homepages. Or simply ask the "Boss", usually the last author.
Clearly it doesn't work if the paper is too old...

So if sci-hub.org is down, try the mirrors! And if the mirrors are also down... well there are still the other options!

This is the most powerful option, the only one that NEVER fails but it is also completely illegal.
I mean, it simply doesn't look like something legal, but I could be wrong... anyway you are warned!

To use it you have simply to copy the link of the paper, just the link you find on the official page of the journal. YES, the one that, if clicked, prompt you immediately on the page where you are asked for the login and/or the money!

In short, http://sci-hub.org is for scientific papers what library.nu was for books and for this, it will likely experience the same end.

If you CANNOT access sci-hub in your country, just try to install the Firefox and Chrome add-on proxmate.

Note...
Probably, if your institution doesn't have the subscription for the journal you want, probably that journal (and consequently the paper you are interested in), is not that important in your research field.

Another possibility could be that your library has not so much money and in this case other solutions are (partially) justified...

Beyond being the founder of Sci-Hub, the world’s largest pirate site for academic papers, and risking arrest as a result, Alexandra Elbakyan is a typical science graduate student: idealistic, hard-working, and relatively poor. In 1988, when Elbakyan was born in Kazakhstan, the Soviet Union was just beginning to crumble. Books about dinosaurs and evolution fascinated her early on. “I also remember reading Soviet science books that provided scientific explanations for miraculous events thought previously to be produced by gods or magic.” She was hooked.
At university in the Kazakh capital, she discovered a knack for computer hacking. It appealed to her because “unlike higher programming languages that are created by people and are volatile,” making and breaking computer security systems requires a deeper knowledge of mathematics and the primitive “assembly language” that computers use to move information.

Journal paywalls are an example of something that works in the reverse direction, making communication less open and efficient.

Like so many of Kazakhstan’s brightest, Elbakyan left the country to pursue her dreams. First she worked in Moscow in computer security for a year, and then she used the earnings to launch herself to the University of Freiburg in Germany in 2010, where she joined a brain-computer interface project. She was lured by the possibility that such an interface could one day translate the thought content from one mind and upload it to another. But the work fell short of her dreams. “The lab activity was spiritless,” she says. “There was no feeling of pursuing a higher goal.”
Elbakyan did find a community of like-minded researchers in transhumanism, a lofty field that encompasses not just neuroscience and computer technology but also philosophy and even speculative fiction about the future of humanity. She discovered a transhumanism conference in the United States and set her heart on attending, but she struggled to get a U.S. visa. She was rejected the first time and only barely made it to the conference. With the remainder of her summer visa, she did a research internship at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When she got back to Kazakhstan, frustration with the barriers that scientists face would soon lead her to create Sci-Hub—an awe-inspiring act of altruism or a massive criminal enterprise, depending on whom you ask.
Publisher paywalls are the bane of scientists and students in Kazakhstan, she says, and the existing solution was cumbersome: Post a request on Twitter to #IcanhazPDF with your email address. Eventually, a generous researcher at some university with access to the journal will send you the paper.
What was needed, she decided, was a system that allowed that paper to be shared—with absolutely everyone. She had the computer skills—and contacts with other pirate websites—to make that happen, and so Sci-Hub was born. Elbakyan sees the site as a natural extension of her dream of helping humans share good ideas. “Journal paywalls are an example of something that works in the reverse direction,” she says, “making communication less open and efficient.”
Running a pirate site and being sued for what is likely to be millions of dollars in damages hasn’t stopped Elbakyan from pursuing an academic career. Her neuroscience research is on hold, but she has enrolled in a history of science master’s program at a “small private university” in an undisclosed location. Appropriately enough, her thesis focuses on scientific communication. “I perceive Sci-Hub as a practical side of my research.”

Digital piracy is not all about movies and music—pretty much anything that people feel is unfairly priced will find its way online in large numbers. Even academic papers.

In October 2015, a New York district court ruled in favor of the academic publisher Elsevier, which had accused Sci-Hub, a website that offers pirated versions of academic papers, of copyright violation. That decision allowed authorities to take down the site’s domain name, sci-hub.org.

Suspending a domain name does not delete a website forever, though, it just prevents visitors from knowing where exactly to find it. It’s trivial enough to relaunch the same site under another domain, as Sci-Hub did, setting up as sci-hub.io. Now knowledge of the new domain has spread far and wide, with mentions of it showing up across social networks like Reddit and Hacker News, and with coverage in publications like Big Think and The Atlantic (our sister publication).

Sci-Hub’s tagline is “to remove all barriers in the way of science.” It was created by Alexandra Elbakyan, a neuroscience researcher from Kazakhstan, and is effectively an automated version of the #icanhazpdf hashtag. Most academic papers are behind some kind of paywall, coming out to around $30 per paper, according to one estimate. In the manual way of getting around this, someone tweets a link to a paper along with their email address and the hashtag #icanhazpdf. Someone else, who has access to the paper, perhaps through a subscription or their university, then downloads and emails the paper to them.

Sci-Hub, on the other hand, takes a link to a paper and automatically tries credentials for various universities until it manages to gain access to the paper, retrieving the PDF. This method gives it access to more information than any individual researcher or institution, and Sci-Hub estimates its total access at 47 million papers.

The new domain will be hard for a US-based lawsuit, like Elsevier’s from last year, to shut down. The US only has jurisdiction over registrars based in the US, such as .com, .net, and .org. The trendy .io domain is actually registered to the British Indian Ocean Territory, meaning the UK would have to act, as happened with PopcornTime.io, the Netflix-for-pirates.

But as The Atlantic points out, Sci-Hub will be able to survive any number of domain seizures thanks to its existence on the “dark web.” Accessing the site in this way, through the distributed Tor network, does not involve any centralized registry, meaning there is no single entity that authorities can shut down.

The main beneficiaries of Sci-Hub are outside of the US, like the site’s creator herself. The traffic figures from Alexa.com, though only a crude estimate, list users from China, Iran, India, Brazil, and Russia as the top visitors to sci-hub.io, with the US outside the top five. While even Harvard has said it can’t afford the steep prices of some publishers, most American universities offer relatively robust access, and researchers may be able to afford the $30 or so it usually costs to purchase a paper.

“For me, even the purchase of one such article would be a financial setback,” Alexandra told Russia Today via email. “So I had to go about acquiring all the articles by pirate means.”

Sci-Hub is an online repository of over 51,000,000^[1] scientific academic papers and articles,^[2] available through its website. New papers are uploaded daily after accessing them through educational institutions.^[3] Founded by Alexandra Elbakyan from Kazakhstan in 2011, it began as a reaction to the high cost of research papers behind paywalls, typically US$30 each when bought on a per-paper basis.^[4] Academic publisher Elsevier has in 2015 filed a legal complaint in New York City alleging copyright infringement by Sci-Hub.^[5]
The Sci-Hub project started running on 5 September 2011,^[9] founded by Alexandra Elbakyan, a software developer and neurotechnology researcher from Kazakhstan,^[10] with the goal to increase the spread of knowledge by allowing more people to access paywalled content.^[11] The project's original domain name, Sci-Hub.org, was suspended in November 2015 due to a court order.^[12] The project resurfaced again that same month under a .io domain.^[13]
The site has become very popular in developing countries including India, Indonesia,^[14] Pakistan, Iran, China, Russia and Brazil.^[15] As of early 2016, data released by Elbakyan shows that developed countries also use Sci-Hub, as a large proportion of the downloads comes from the US and countries inside the European Union.^[7] Providing access to research for less privileged institutions and countries has been Elbakyan's express goal in creating the site, stating that she similarly shared papers without permission when she did research at a Kazakhstan university, given the need to skim hundreds of papers.^[16]
Sci-Hub is the first known website to provide automatic and free access to paywalled academic papers on a massive scale.^[17] Before Sci-Hub people used to request and share research papers manually by direct email to paper authors or other academics^[17] or by requesting them via online research forums^[18] or social networks, like the #ICanHazPDF Twitter tag.^[19]

Sci-Hub provides readers with articles without requiring a subscription or payment.^[20] In February 2016, the Sci-Hub website claimed to serve over 200,000 requests per day.^[21]^[22]^[7] According to Elbakyan, the website had an average of 80,000 visitors per day before its original domain, Sci-Hub.org, was blocked.^[2]
The site gets papers by passing through publishers' paywalls using a collection of credentials (user IDs and passwords) belonging to people at educational institutions with legitimate access to the publishers' sites. According to article published in Science, Elbakyan said that many anonymous academics from around the world have donated their credentials.^[7] Publishers have claimed that Sci-hub relies on credentials obtained by phishing.^[7] Sci-hub has credentials to access papers published at JSTOR, Springer, Sage, and Elsevier, among others.^[23] As of 2013, Sci-Hub started collaborating with Library Genesis, a repository of educational books and documents hosted in Russia.^[24] If the requested paper was available there, it was deployed to the user. If a paper was not previously available at LibGen, Sci-Hub would download it and share a copy of the document with LibGen for future use.^[20] Today, Sci-Hub relies on a distributed network of repositories to store and retrieve research papers.^{[citation needed]} The site's operation is financed by user donations^[7]^[25] of the cryptocurrency bitcoin.^[26]
In 2016 Sci-Hub's .io domain was taken offline after a complaint from Elsevier was directed to the site's Chinese registrar, Now.cn. Despite the takedown by the registrar, Sci-Hub remains reachable via alternate domains, IP address and a .onion Tor Hidden Service scihub22266oqcxt.onion; the latter of which TorrentFreak states is "pretty much immune" to take down requests.^[1]^[27]
